An entertaining no-brainer combining romance and high-brow quiz shows.
I love University Challenge, so couldn't fail to at least marginally like this. However, I was pleasantly surprised.

I thoroughly enjoyed Ellis' début, and you can't fail to connect with the protagonist.

The Fountain
4.5/5

A fascinating 'mini-epic' that is a heartfelt look and love, life and death.
Absolutely classic Aronofsky, and the fact that Kronos Quartet did the score: a touch of genius.

Shortbus
3.5/5

One of the most fucked-up films I saw in 2008, but a great one, despite it's shocking non-simulated sex scenes.

Chaos Theory

I watched the trailer for this after watching it, and I'm glad I didn't see it before: if I did, there's no way I would have watched it!

Le silence de Lorna
3.5/5
2008-12-20 19:30
If this film had finished 15 minutes earlier, I would have rated it better. I knew she was going mad, and I wanted the ending to be left up to my imagination a bit more.

The film of teh 50s that couldn't have been made in the 50s.

Gomorra
4/5

Set in Naples, Gomorra looks at the influence of the powerful Camorra organisation.
Gritty and eye-opening; Gomorra is worthy of your time.

The Wicker Man
3.5/5

This horror has dated well and is still shocking. Damn, I love that final scene!

There Will Be Blood
4.5/5
2008-09-24 15:23
An well crafted, timeless drama. Daniel Day-Lewis' acting is first rate (the rest of the cast, likewise) and if it wasn't for what felt like a forced ending, this would be perfect.

Kidulthood
3/5
2008-09-20 15:26
A gritty look at teenage life in Inner West London. Well written, directed, and acted... but it's just not my cup of tea.

Gone Baby Gone
4/5

Makes you question right and wrong, with a great story to boot.
No wonder the release was delayed in the UK, though.

Young People Fucking
4/5

Fun, funny, and intelligent.
Don't judge a book by it's cover: much better than the title alludes to.

Before Sunset
4.5/5

Great film. The sequel to Before Sunrise but I haven't seen it. Let me realise that this film is great in its own right. I'm never one for romance films, but like his novels, Ethan Hawke knows how to write (he's the co-writer) and I was enthralled by the story from the beginning.

The Nines

Would have preferred an ambiguous ending and not having the plot explained to me in Part Three.
